Welcome to National Anti-Bullying Week 2008, which runs from 17 - 23 November.

The Competition

To mark this year's event, respectme and the Scottish Government have joined forces to launch an anti-bullying competition, based around the theme, 'what bullying means to me'.  It's a very wide-ranging topic and we want to see young people interpret it in any way they wish. They can use their imagination to develop a submission, which may include:
  • Designing a poster
  • Writing a poem
  • Recording a song or a rap
  • Writing a story
  • Developing a blog or diary
  • Writing a play
  • Painting a picture

This list is by no means exhaustive and we'd welcome entries which address the topic in ways other than those above. So there's plenty of scope for creativity!

The competition is open to children and young people between 9 and 16 years old, and schools and youth groups across Scotland will be receiving their competition packs shortly.  You can also download copies of the Anti-Bullying Week competition booklet and Anti-Bullying Week poster.  The deadline for submissions is Friday 17 October 2008.

Other National Anti-Bullying Week Activties

If you don't have the time to enter the competiton, there are a number of different activities you can enjoy.  Some schools use everyday classes to mark National Anti-Bullying Week.  Maybe the maths class can compile some bullying statistics? We heard from one organisation which used a geography lesson to map the perimeter of its building and grounds, and asked pupils to shade in the areas where they felt safe and those where they thought bullying might take place.

Here are a few other suggestions:

Create a poster
Ask pupils to create a poster about bullying and what it means to them.  This might include how they feel about bullying generally or perhaps something more specific, such as cyberbullying.  You could hold your own school or youth group's competition and showcase the winning entries at a parents' evening.

Themed assembly

Perhaps your school could arrange themed assemblies for National Anti-Bullying Week.  An assembly might be an opportunity to explore some of the different types of bullying that can take place and to reinforce your school or youth group's commitment to anti-bullying.

Drama
Pupils could create and perform a play or a song about anti-bullying.  Some young people find it easier to express themselves through mediums such as this, and you might decide that the finished result could win our competition!  You could also use the performance as part of an assembly or other whole-school activity.

Badge-making competition
Pupils can create a badge in class which they can wear during National Anti-Bullying Week to show their support.

Group work

This could be a useful way of getting pupils/young people to think about different types of bullying and discussing these and the impacts that they might have.  The most creative group could win a prize.

The above represents a small number of activities you can take part in.  If your school or youth group is doing something different to markfor National Anti-Bullying Week, we'd be delighted to hear from you.  Contact us at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
