respectme has launched a nationwide cyberbullying campaign to mark National Anti-Bullying Week (19-25 November).
‘Cyberbullying...Are you switched on?' aims to remove some of the fear that surrounds cyberbullying and to bridge the knowledge gap that often exists between adults and children and young people when it comes to mobile phones and the internet.
Cyberbullying is no different from other forms of bullying; the behaviour is the same and the impact is no less devastating, but disconnecting mobile phones and the internet won't stop cyberbullying. Laptops and mobile phones don't bully people; people bully people.
Brian Donnelly, respectme Director, said:
"Relationships are playing out online in the same way that they always have in the ‘real' world; technology is simply providing children and young people with a new way of connecting.
"The fear of cyberbullying or a lack of knowledge about new technologies can lead some adults to think that disconnecting mobile phones or the internet is the only answer, but that's not the case. Behind every cyberbullying incident is a person. To deal with all kinds of bullying behaviour, we need to connect with the people involved and address the reasons behind the behaviour."
To support the campaign respectme has produced a cyberbullying booklet, which offers practical advice and guidance for the safe and responsible use of mobile phones and internet-based communications.
