respectme is hosting Scotland's third National Anti-Bullying Conference at the Crowne Plaza in Glasgow on Tuesday 17 November 2009 to mark the start of Anti-Bullying Week and the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

We are delighted to confirm the attendance of key speakers including Tam Baillie, Scotland's Commissioner for Children and Young People, and Keith Brown, Minister for Schools & Skills.  We will also be joined by Heather Gray, Director of Who Cares? Scotland and Billy Watson, Chief Executive of SAMH, who will chair the day's proceedings.

We are also pleased to announce the participation of Glen Campbell, presenter of BBC's 'The Politics Show', will chair a bullying-themed debate led by young people from the English Speaking Union.

Children and young people will play an integral part in the day's proceedings through their participation in workshops, debates and in sharing their personal views and experiences.  Winners of this year's Anti-Bullying Week competition will also be present to receive their prizes.

A series of workshops and themed discussions will allow parents, carers and practitioners to come together to discuss a range of issues relating to anti-bullying in Scotland.

Conference workshop choices include:

Using drama as a resource with children and young people

This workshop will be delivered by Anne Keay and pupils from the drama department at St Margaret Mary's Secondary School in Castlemilk.  It will examine how drama can be used to address a wide range of issues, feelings and emotions generated by bullying behaviour.

Effective use of Persona Dolls
Persona Dolls provide trained professionals with a versatile tool to engage with young children to pro-actively address actions and attitudes that can lead to bullying behaviour.  This workshop will discuss appropriate use of persona dolls, and will introduce case studies and scenarios where they have been used successfully.

Peer Mediation in Action
This workshop will be introduced by Carol Hope the Peer Mediation Development Officer for Scotland. Young peer mediators from Ormiston Primary School in East Lothian will be accompanied by their Head Teacher, Helen Gardyne, who has been instrumental in the development of this and other initiatives in the school to tackle issues in the playground.

The participants in this workshop will be given the opportunity to see peer mediation in action, to hear how peer mediation is developing in Scottish Schools, to participate in some of the activities used in training peer mediators (facilitated by the peer mediators) and to have some fun!

Interactive workshop
This workshop will give delegates a further oppportunity to share their views and experiences and help to shape the future of anti-bullying work in Scotland.

Bullying and Additional Support Needs Learning
Bullying can be a problem among children and young people with additional support needs.  The Additional Support for Learning (ASL) Code of Practice identifies that both children who are being bullied and children who are bullying others might need extra support. Using case studies Enquire - the Scottish advice service for additional support in learning - will highlight the range of issues around bullying and ASL legislation and the impacts on the education of the children involved.

Policy through to Practice - getting it right
Developing a robust anti-bullying policy is just the first step, how you then implement it into day to day practices is key to its success.  This workshop will take you through the practical steps you need to take to ensure that your anti-bullying policy meets the specific requirements of your organisation.

Islamaphobia and Bullying
Delivered by Show Racism the Red Card, the anti-racist charity, this workshop will look at some of the prejudices that bullying behaviour stems from and discuss how these can be addressed among children and young people.

It's Our Scotland Too: Bullying and Learning Disabilities
CK Respect is a project run by Common Knowledge aimed at young people with learning difficulties (16-25years).  In this workshop the young people with showcase the work they've done over the past two years.  The workshop aims to highlight the common experience of bullying for the majority of the population of people with learning difficulties, which starts at schools and, for many, continues on well into adulthood.

The young people examine different types of bullying, where it happens, how it makes them feel, the impact upon their lives and vitally the way forward out of bullying situations. They will use a recent poll of bullying towards people with learning difficulties and compare the figures with those of the workshop participants.
