Glasgow Youth Film Festival

This years Glasgow Youth Film Festival (GYFF) is jam packed with youth inspired, imaginative and artistic films that highlight; youth empowerment, youth issues and youth culture.  Over this two week period Glasgow will come alive with youth film culture.  These films will take place in venues across Glasgow , with the majority of these showings taking place at the Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT).  These showings are very reasonably priced to attend, with some showings being free – but do require ticket booking in advance.

respectme was thrilled to be approached by the GYFF to help raise awareness and promote Director Ruben Ostlund’s film Play, which explores key bullying themes.  respectme staff will be attending this showing and will be distributing anti-bullying resources at this event.  This free, but ticketed showing will take place on Monday 13th February 2012 starting at 18.00 in the GFT.

Play
is a Swedish film with English subtitles, which was one of the outstanding titles at the Cannes film festival last year; it is ‘a provocative, unsettling film that you’ll be pondering for days’.  Below is the GYFF’s summary of Play:

‘Over the course of a tense afternoon in central Gothenburg - Sweden - five African immigrant boys toy with three well-heeled teens.  The outcome, essentially, is the theft of a mobile phone, but the boys’ purpose is also more subtle and sadistic – a complex “game” of intimidation that takes advantage of white liberal guilt and political correctness.’

After the showing, there will be a special panel discussion about issues raised in the film.  This panel will be made up of inspiring young people with a range of different experiences in film making, anti-bullying projects and anti-bullying campaigning.  respectme are pleased to support a young person who we have previously worked with to be apart of this discussion panel on the night.

For information about all the showings and to book places to see Play or any of the other films during the Glasgow Youth Film Festival, please visit: http://www.glasgowfilm.org/festival

respectme Saltire Schools Rugby League Tournament

respectme was delighted to become an official partner of the Saltire Schools Rugby League Tournament in 2011.  Here at respectme we recognise the importance of promoting the benefits of sport and physical activity for young people; this tournament promotes friendship, team effort and dedication.  It gives young people opportunities to express themselves and thrive in an exciting sporting activity.

SAMH (The Scottish Association for Mental Health) is an official partner of the Scotland Rugby League and through its ‘Get Active’ programme this opportunity for respectme to become involved with the Saltire Schools Rugby League arose.  The Saltire Schools Rugby League Tournament is a nationwide secondary Scottish schools competition for S2 – S5 boys.  There are currently 24 secondary schools competing for the Saltire respectme Cup.  The Tournament is broken down into regional rounds for teams to compete, before the national rounds begin.  It is also has two secondary school year leagues; there is a S2/3 category and a S4/5 category.

The Tournament has also expressed an interest in creating anti-bullying policies and respectme staff will be on hand to work with the league to develop these strategies.

Andy's Story

Andy’s Story is a Diana Anti-Bullying Award winning drama production that we worked with students and staff from St Margaret Mary’s Secondary School to develop. Its achievements serve as an outstanding example of the capacity of young people to impact powerfully and positively on their peers, their community and beyond.

‘Andy’s Story’ tells the story of a boy who is experiencing bullying at school, and helps to develop awareness of bullying behaviour and its consequences from a young person's perspective.  It examines the notion of fear and respect among peer groups and looks at the different choices young people are faced with when it comes to bullying behaviour.

The young people and their drama teacher showed immense dedication, creativity and commitment to the project, from the initial ideas stage through to the development of the final script.  The key messages and scenarios developed were so powerful that we have now turned it into an anti-bullying resource that can be used with 12-18 year olds in schools, youth groups and other settings across Scotland .

The performance was filmed and the Andy’s Story DVD was created to generate discussion around fear, respect and bullying behaviour.  Supporting materials have also been developed, which include practical exercises and guidance on how the resources can be used with young people.

Since its creation, Andy’s Story has generated a lot of interest and has been performed by the students from St Margaret Mary’s on many occasions.

The group performed at the launch of SAMH’s ‘Get Active’ campaign to an audience which included SAMH Ambassador and Olympic gold medallist, Sir Chris Hoy.

They took to the stage in September 2010 when Minister for Skills and Lifelong Learning, Keith Brown launched the DVD, and again when Glasgow City Council chose the school to launch its revised anti-bullying policy in November 2010.

A copy of Andy’s Story DVD has been sent to every secondary school in Scotland and can be viewed below. The supporting resources can also be downloaded from this section of the website.

“Since the two national conferences at which St. Margaret Mary’s drama group performed Andy’s Story, our journey has continued to be interesting, rewarding, and increasingly challenging.”
