Firpark School, Motherwell

NBA (No Bullying Allowed) was created through a joint project involving Firpark School, FBS (Funky Blue Smurfs) Advocacy Group and Motherwell College, and was funded by Comic Relief.

NBA is based on the ideas and aspirations of two self-advocacy groups of young people with additional support needs living in North Lanarkshire, who frequently experience attacks of bullying in both school and even more so in the community.

NBA helps young people to build their assertiveness skills and allows them to speak openly about the issue of bullying which is a real concern for them.

The NBA pack contains a workbook with activities to highlight bullying and to allow young people to be fully involved in creating an anti-bullying charter for their school.  The pack contains a DVD with two animated films highlighting the devastating impact of bullying.

At Firpark School, we have an anti-bullying policy and an anti-bullying charter agreed by staff, pupils, the School Council and the Parent Council.  We also have an advice leaflet for parents and a reporting system specifically for bullying incidents.  As part of our preventative measures we have Individual Management Plans which highlight triggers, motivators and action to be taken for pupils with Autistic Spectrum Disorder.  We also make full use of the First Class e-mail system with instant information being sent to all staff which may be pertinent to how a pupil may be behaving on that particular day.

We have a comprehensive PSHE program with anti-bullying lessons from S1 to S6.  In these lessons pupils are not only listening to information but are actively involved in cooperative learning.

Should any young person, school, parents or other organisation wish to find out more about NBA, please contact Firpark School, Motherwell.
