Greenwood Academy (Irvine) v Williamwood High School (Clarkston)

In two previous encounters these two teams had run each other close in every occasion. In the preliminary rounds of the respectme competition Williamwood defeated Greenwood twenty points to twelve however during the regional play offs Greenwood fought off Williamwood to earn themselves a sixteen all draw.

The opening exchanges looked as if Greenwood would dominate the game, loose play the balls from Williamwood and quick marker defence from Greenwood forced Williamwood to turn over the ball on many occasion. Greenwood capitalised on the Williamwood mistakes early in the half scoring first through strong running by Logan Ferguson however the try couldn’t be converted by Jack Kennedy. Further mistakes proved costly for Williamwood and Greenwood took advantage allowing Kristen Dean to cross the line, Jack Kennedy converted. The game settled down for the next ten minutes both sides running hard and tackling well, Williamwood gained the edge with Thomas Brown scoring their first which he failed to convert. Greenwood scored managed a further unconverted try through Scott Humpries took Greenwood to half time with a convincing lead.

The game restarted in the second half with Williamwood forcing Greenwood to turn the ball over on the sixth tackle. Williamwood looked to have turned around from the first half and Greenwood seemed to be suffering from the exerts of the first half. Williamwood were first to score through Cameron Graham which was converted by Thomas Brown bringing the game to within a try for Williamwood. It seemed the comeback was on however Greenwood hit back within five minutes on the Williamwood score to further stretch the lead with Calum Cook scoring for the Ayrshire team, Jack Kennedy failed to convert. Williamwood would not lie down and after further strong runs and expansive play Cameron Graham crossed for his second, Thomas Brown failed to convert. With only seconds remaining Williamwood found themselves in possession deep in their own half however strong runs up the Greenwood right flank took them to within 20 metres of their oppositions line only for the ball to e lost in the tackle right on the final whistle. It was to be Greenwoods day.

S4/S5 Under 17 George Fairbairn Cup Final
Westhill Academy (Aberdeenshire) v Duncanrig High School (East Kilbride)

Westhill had only encountered Duncanrig once which resulted in Duncanrig securing a very close eight points to six win setting up a totally unpredictable final. This game could go either way.

Following ten minutes of end to end contests both in attack and defence it would be Westhill that would break the deadlock opening the scoring with Matthew Smith crossing to open the scoring Westhill failed to convert. Duncanrig restarted the game and Westhill responded with further vigour, Niall Hall broke the Duncanrig defense from tem metres out and score under the posts setting up an easy conversion for Mitchell Scott. Duncarig were not going to give in to easily, a passage of play saw Mark Donnachy race down Westhill’s right flank to score five metres from the touch line, a difficult kick from thirty metres out meant the try went unconverted. A final rally from Westhill proved to strong for Duncarig’s now tired defence and Derren Reid added  to the Westhill tally scoring 5 metres to the right of the oppositions posts, Mitchell Scott converted

Duncarig started the second half as the stronger team working hard in defence and being creative in attack utilising support runners to off load in tackles which rewarded them with a Gregor Banford try, a missed conversion could prove costly in the later stages of the game. Westhill fought back and capitalised on hadling mistakes make by Duncarig, Derren Reid dived over for his second, Mitchell Scott failed to add the extras. Duncarig hit back and looked to coming back into the game, slick handling and aggressive running allowed Gregor Banford in for his second another missed conversion left Westhill eight points ahead with only four minutes on the clock. Westhill restarted with a short kick off which bounced kindly in favour of the Aberdeenshire outfit quick hands saw Westhill camped on the Duncarig twenty metre line, a quick play the ball and strong running from Mitchell Scott allowed him to cross and seal the victory for Westhill right on the final whistle.
